Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Season

Performances at Maggio Musicale Theatre are going on all year around, reaching their highest point in May, with the prestigious Maggio Musicale Festival. 

As opera shows are concerned, the last opera by Giuseppe Verdi, “Falstaff”, will be conducted by John Eliott Gardiner (Nicola Alaimo starring) starting from November 19; from December 9, opera lovers cannot miss the “Madame Butterfly” by Giacomo Puccini (Svetana Aksenova, soprano), conductor Francesco Ivan Ciampa. On December 23, Zubin Mehta will conduct “Fidelio”, the only opera by Beethoven and, from January 16, also “Fledermaus” by J. Strauss Jr. ; then, “Lo sposo di tre e marito di nessuna” - from January 22 - by Luigi Cherubini, and “L’amico Fritz” by Pietro Mascagni (from March 1).

As for concerts, on November 24, Zubin Mehta will conduct “Die Schöpfung” (the Creation), monumental work by Haydn, whereas on December 11 Valery Gergiev will be on stage with Orchestra Sinfonica Mariinsky from San Pietroburgo (music by Prokof’ev, Bartòk, Stravinskij) and on December 16 Klaus Makela will perform a concert with music by Bruch e Mahler.

An important day for Teatro del Maggio will be December 2, as the New Auditorium will be inaugurated with a concert based on Puccini and Bruckner music, conducted by Zubin Mehta, who is the same that will perform the New Year's Eve Concert (December 31: the last two symphony by Beethoven). The Christmas Concert is still to be defined. Two important pianists will perform in January: Martha Argerich (on January 10, the Montecarlo Orchestra conducted by Philip Dutoit, music by Ravel) and Maurizio Pollini (on January 19, conductor Zubin Mehta, music by Mozart and Schumann). To follow a series of concerts conducted by famous musicians such as Ingo Metzmacher (February 5: Mozart, Busoni), Philippe Jordan (February 19: Beethoven, Bruckner), James Conlon (February 26), Daniele Gatti (March 11: Fauré, Schumann, Profof’ev - Hélène Grimaud piano), Franz Welser Möst (April 6 and 10, Schubert and Schumann).

All concerts will be performed by Orchestra and Choir of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
