The Galleria dell'Accademia, in collaboration with the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Reggio Calabria (MArRC), hosts from 20 December 2022 to 12 March 2023, the exhibition I bronzi di Riace. A journey through images: The bronzes, portrayed in Luigi Spina's photographs, created in 16 great panels, celebrate the 50th anniversary of their discovery, an extraordinary event that has marked the history of our country's artistic heritage.
The two magnificent bronze statues were discovered in 1972 near Riace Marina. After an adventurous recovery, they were transported to the National Museum of Reggio Calabria and underwent an initial restoration, which was later (1975) entrusted to the Laboratory of the Archaeological Superintendency of Tuscany. The Bronzes were exhibited to the public for the first time in December 1980, in Florence, in the Archaeological Museum, and then, in 1981, at the Quirinale Palace, in Rome.
At the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, 16 great photographs will be on display to celebrate 50 years since their discovery. A tribute to the power and iconographic beauty of the Riace Bronzes, undisputed masterpieces of 5th century BC Greek art.
