The Protestant Cemetery was built in 1828 outside the city walls and over the years has inspired numerous artists, such as Arnold Bocklin with his celebrated painting The Island of the Dead. It houses the tombs of the foreign community of Florence, who in the 19th century frequently stayed in Florence, a fervent cultural center at the time.
