Florence and Art Nouveau, Historic Cafes, Fiesole

The Florence City Tour Guide, Daniela Carboni, with her blog "Ricomincio da Firenze" (I’ll Start with Florence), has proposed a series of original itineraries to discover the city.

1) Art Nouveau in the center of Florence is a walking tour that highlights the most important buildings in the Art Nouveau style, a turn-of-the-century artistic style that is particularly elegant and refined. Florence has numerous buildings that are the works by renowned artists (architects Giovanni Michelazzi and Gino Coppedè, and the artist Galileo Chini), and which helped spread this unique style. Outstanding examples are the Casa-Galleria Vichi (Liberty Palace) in the Borgo Ognissanti area and Casa Navone (Palazzo Dudley), in the heart of Florence, on the exclusive Via Tornabuoni.

2) Another interesting itinerary is dedicated to Historic Cafes in Florence. This walking tour traces the influences and events of some of the most famous cafes and intellectual circles that made history, in Florence and throughout Italy, at the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s. These cafes – like the famous Caffé Michelangelo in Via Cavour (a haunt for the Macchiaioli artists), or the Giubbe Rosse coffee house in Piazza Repubblica (a favorite for the Italian Futurists) – were meeting places for well-known artists and intellectuals, but also for Florentine bourgeois.

3) The Walking Tour of Fiesole and the Bandini Museum is the perfect way to discover Fiesole, her ancient Etruscan origins (especially noteworthy is the archeological area that includes the famous Roman Amphitheater), the splendid panorama of Florence from the top of the hill with its convent of Saint Francis. Fiesole was the preferred location for scholars, artists, critics and intellectuals, such as the cleric Angelo Maria Bandini, who created the namesake museum mostly dedicated to sacred art from the 13th to the 16th century.
