Anfiteatro Romano di Firenze

Florence in Roman Times, Galileo Museum

The Florence City Tour Guide Cristiano Papi, with his "Ricomincio da Firenze" (I’ll Start with Florence) blog, has proposed two interesting itineraries to discover the city.

1) Florence in Roman Times is a walk back in time, between historical memory and ruins from Millennial Florentia. Exploring well-known places, such as Piazza della Repubblica, Via Proconsolo and Piazza Signoria, the guide will highlight the city’s Roman architecture, of which still today exist tangible remains. Typical are the streets around the Basilica of Santa Croce, with their twists and turns, which is where the Roman Amphitheater was built.

2) Another must-see in Florence is the Galileo Museum! From the measurement of time, to the movement of the stars, from the art of warfare to geographical maps, from Galileo’s discoveries to chemistry in the early 1800s, the museum houses all the passion for science and scientific instruments that belonged first to the Medicis and then to the Lorraine family. Unique pieces are Antonio Santucci’s armillary sphere, Galileo’s telescope and… his middle finger!
