Open-air cinema: spectacular museum-arenas where you can watch a film with subtitles

A different way to explore the city? By watching a great film on a summer night! The Florentine area offers a wide range of stunning open-air cinemas set in some of the city's most beautiful locations, including historic squares, museums, panoramic terraces, and cloisters.

Apriti Cinema – Piazza Pitti

Set in the magnificent square of Palazzo Pitti, in the heart of the Oltrarno district, Apriti Cinema celebrates its 15th edition from 15 June to 26 July 2026. The festival features a rich programme of short and feature films, documentaries, and fiction movies, all screened in their original language with Italian subtitles.

Cinema in Villa – Villa Bardini

From 8 July to 24 August, Villa Bardini hosts one of Italy’s most enchanting open-air cinemas. Every evening, visitors can enjoy a diverse and engaging film programme from the villa’s breathtaking terrace overlooking Florence. Admission is available with a single ticket costing €5.00. Italian and European films participating in the Cinema Revolution initiative are offered at the reduced price of €3.50.

Cinema in the Cloister of Sant’Orsola

Among Florence’s most atmospheric summer venues is the Cinema in the Cloister of Sant’Orsola, located within the former convent on Via Guelfa. Running from 29 June to 6 September 2026, with screenings starting at 9:30 pm, the programme includes art-house cinema, films in their original language, debut works, and themed film series.

Cinema Under the Stars – Roman Theatre of Fiesole

August brings the return of the much-loved Cinema Under the Stars at the Roman Theatre of Fiesole, one of the oldest surviving Roman theatres. Screenings take place every evening at 9:15 pm, with a programme curated by the Stensen Foundation. Admission is available with a single ticket costing €5.00.

OpenCine at Castello dell’Acciaiolo – Scandicci

Set amid the greenery of Parco dell’Acciaiolo in Scandicci, the charming orchard garden of Castello dell’Acciaiolo hosts a new edition of OpenCine, the film festival promoted by the Amici del Cabiria association. Taking place from 13 July to 7 August 2026, the event presents a continuously updated programme of screenings where cinematic quality meets reflection on contemporary issues such as environmental sustainability, social inclusion, equal opportunities, employment, intercultural dialogue, and historical awareness.
