Settembre Limitese and Palio con la montata in Limite sull'Arno - historical reenactment

From 1 to 28 September 2026, ‘Settembre Limitese’ returns to Limite sull’Arno, organised by the Pro Loco in collaboration with local associations, under the patronage and with the support of the Municipality of Capraia and Limite and the Metropolitan City.
The festival comprises over 30 events, including cultural, sporting, musical, theatrical and gastronomic activities: amongst these is the eagerly awaited ‘Palio con la Montata’, which re-enacts the maritime Palio that originated in the late 19th century, bearing witness to the rowing tradition of Italy’s oldest rowing club. The regatta, in which the city’s four districts take part, represented by crews wearing their distinctive colours, is contested on fixed-bench gozzi boats with eight rowers plus a coxswain and a ‘montatore’. Victory goes to the ‘montatore’ who, at the end of a speed race on the Arno, is the first to climb a rope suspended over the river and grab the white flag at its top.
