The Maggio musicale Festival

Scheduled from April 19 to July 1, 2026, is the Florence Maggio Musicale Festival, one of the oldest music festivals in Europe, along with that of Salzburg. As susual the current Festival (88th edition) will take place at the ultra-modern Teatro del Maggio, on the edge of the Cascine Park (next to the Stazione Leopolda, moreover well connected by the Tramway).

Particularly rich and of high quality is this year's programme, with the participation of important names from the international music scene. Below is a summary of the many events.

The programme includes a series of operas: The Death of Klinghoffer by John Adams, directed by Luca Gudagnino, from 19 April; Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi, conducted by Zubin Mehta, from 12 May; Giulio Cesare by Georg Friedrich Händel, directed by David Livermore, from 14 June.

As for the concerts, Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde and Beethoven's 9th Symphony, will be conducted by Zubin Mehta, on 23 and 29 April respectively; on 3 May, Michele Mariotti conducts From the new world a symphonic masterpiece by Dvoƙák; Mahler's famous 5th Symphony, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, will be on stage on 16 May. In the dual role of conductor and violinist, Dmitry Sinkovski performs Rimsky-Korsakov's Shéhérazade on 23 May; piano concert by Beatrice Rana (music by Beethoven and B,ruckner) on 28 May; on 6 June concert by Asmik Grigorian, soprano (Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninov); Diego Ceretta, conductor, music by Beethoven, Mendelssohn & Schubert, on 9 June; Francesco Meli, tenor - Luca Salsi, baritone (Verdi & Liszt) on 16 June. The Festival concludes with the monumental complete performance of Beethoven's nine symphonies conducted by Daniele Gatti, from 18 June to 1 July.
