Le Grand Théâtre de Dieu

Le Grand Théâtre de Dieu

Classical music, opera and ballet

Le Grand Théâtre de Dieu is a concert dedicated to the “splendors of French sacred Baroque music,” presented as part of the “Maggio Aperto” series of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. It will take place on Thursday, June 11, 2026, in the Sala Mehta of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

The program focuses on French sacred music from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with special attention to the tricentenary of the composer Michel-Richard de Lalande, a central figure in the court music of Louis XIV. The concert aims to bring renewed attention to composers who are rarely performed in Italy today, yet were fundamental to the so-called French “Grand Siècle,” the period of greatest cultural splendor of the French monarchy.

The performance will be presented by the Istituto Giovanni Battista Lulli, with Samuele Lastrucci conducting the Orchestra Modo Antiquo ensemble and the Coro dei Musici del Gran Principe. The repertoire includes works by de Lalande, Sébastien de Brossard, and Jean Gilles, as well as a contemporary piece by Federico Maria Sardelli, Jesu dulcis memoria, composed in 2019 and dedicated to Lastrucci himself.

The concert presents itself as a journey through the spirituality and sonic grandeur of French Baroque music: solemn choral works, refined orchestrations, and highly theatrical liturgical atmospheres, fully in keeping with the title Le Grand Théâtre de Dieu, meaning “The Great Theater of God.”
