Long imagined as a “promised land,” California has been a laboratory for cultural and social transformations that have shaped the global imagination, from Hollywood and the counterculture to the technological revolution of Silicon Valley. California Dreaming explores its myths and contradictions, between innovation and inequality, diverse identities and social tensions.
The exhibition brings historic and contemporary artists connected to the Californian context into dialogue, from David Hockney, James Turrell, Judy Chicago, John Baldessari, and Ed Ruscha to Sadie Barnette, Alex Israel, Lauren Halsey, and Refik Anadol, offering a portrait of California suspended between desire and disillusionment, beauty and dystopia.
