Piazza Madonna della Neve alle Murate

One of the two exercise yards of the Florentine prison of the Murate has become a new city square: Piazza Madonna della Neve.

The square, which is fully pedestrianised, is entirely surrounded by the buildings that were part of the former convent, which later became a prison and was requalified by architect Renzo Piano.
On the square are the premises of the MIP - Murate Idea Park, a space that promotes innovation and start-ups. It uses the structures most reminiscent of prison activity, left intact. Other buildings have instead been converted into housing.

The remains of the church of Santa Maria della Neve, which was part of the complex, are now reduced to the façade, seamlessly incorporated into the high wall of the Murate on the Via Ghibellina side.

Another side of the square is bordered by the corridor overlooked by various businesses and the connection to the other courtyard, now Piazza delle Murate: here you find a Caffé Letterario and the MAD - Murate Art District
