Artemisia Gentileschi in Florence

From 21 October 2026 to 4 April 2027, the Museo degli Innocenti in Florence will host an exhibition dedicated to the life and career of Artemisia Gentileschi during the years of her Florentine sojourn.

Artemisia arrived in Florence in 1612 and remained there until around 1620, establishing a new phase in her career. In 1616, she became the first woman admitted to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, gaining full recognition within the city’s professional and cultural world. She frequented the Medici court, came into contact with leading figures of the intellectual and cultural milieu of the time, and engaged with the vibrant Florentine artistic scene of the seventeenth century.

The exhibition focuses precisely on this crucial period in her development as a painter, when she established herself in an artistic environment that was still predominantly male. It also explores the artistic and cultural context in which Artemisia developed her distinctive visual language. The exhibition brings her works into dialogue with those of some of the leading figures of seventeenth-century Florentine painting, including Cristofano Allori, Francesco Furini, Cesare Dandini, Giovanni Martinelli, Filippo Tarchiani, Fabrizio Vannini, Lorenzo Lippi, Il Volterrano, and Jacopo Vignali.

Admission to the exhibition also includes access to the entire permanent collection of the Museo degli Innocenti.
