Finding comfort in the city

August in Florence is synonymous with intense heat, and spending many hours outdoors, especially during the hottest part of the day, can be very tiring or, in some cases, even dangerous for certain groups of residents and tourists, such as the elderly or very young children.

The city of Florence has compiled a list of a large number of so-called ‘climate shelters’ – open, free-to-use public spaces and refreshment areas that are cool, provide access to water and offer shelter from the heat.

These include public libraries, gardens and parks, and, ultimately, neighbourhood council offices – places where you can stop for a while, rest, have a drink and allow your overheated or tired body to return to a more comfortable state.

The list of climate shelters, which can also be viewed on a map, spread across the historic centre and the city’s neighbourhoods, can be found at the link below (pages in Italian)
