Beyond the Renaissance. Between Dürer and Parmigianino

Exhibitions

Florence’s autumn exhibition season opens with a major exhibition at Palazzo Medici Riccardi: Beyond the Renaissance. Between Dürer and Parmigianino, running from September 10, 2026 to January 5, 2027.

Promoted by the Metropolitan City of Florence and organized by the MUS.E Foundation, the exhibition, curated by Daniel Blau, Sergio Risaliti, and Valentina Zucchi, explores the technical and aesthetic richness of European Mannerist printmaking, in dialogue with the work of Georg Baselitz, whose artistic research and collecting have been deeply connected to the masters of the sixteenth century.

The idea of the exhibit is of moving beyond the canonical image of the Italian Renaissance and highlighting the extraordinary technical and aesthetic experimentation of European Mannerism, particularly through engraving, chiaroscuro, and printmaking.

The exhibition will feature works from Georg Baselitz’s private collection as well as from the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Budapest.

Beyond the Renaissance. Between Dürer and Parmigianino

Exhibitions

The collection reflects a distinctly Mannerist spirit, combining the curiosity of the artist Baselitz  with the discerning eye of a connoisseur who over time assembled works of extraordinary quality.
The exhibition traces the experiments of thegreat Italian Mannerists, including Parmigianino and Andrea Schiavone, alongside prints by the School of Fontainebleau and Northern masters such as Hans Sebald Beham and Albrecht Dürer, culminating in the innovative explorations of chiaroscuro by artists including Ugo da Carpi, Domenico Beccafumi, Andrea Andreani and Hendrick Goltzius.
