60 Years Later – Florence Remembers the 1966 Flood

Classical music, opera and ballet

Sixty years after one of the most dramatic yet meaningful chapters in the history of our city, Lions Club Firenze Filippo Neri is organising an evening of music, remembrance and solidarity at the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella.

On Wednesday, 4 November 2026, an extraordinary concert will bring together more than 150 performers from Harmonia Cantata, Corale Santa Cecilia di Borgo San Lorenzo and Quadriclavio Corale di Bologna, under the direction of Maestro Grazia Rossi.

This anniversary is an occasion to honour the memory of a tragic event, but also to celebrate the extraordinary spirit of solidarity that enabled Florence to rise again.

The event is organised by Lions Club Firenze Filippo Neri to pay tribute to the “Angels of the Mud” (Angeli del Fango) and to support the Italian Red Cross and Fondazione ANT.

60 Years Later – Florence Remembers the 1966 Flood

Classical music, opera and ballet

The programme will feature Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, culminating in the celebrated Ode to Joy, set to a text by Friedrich Schiller and now a universal symbol of brotherhood, peace and unity among peoples.

A message of profound relevance today, which, sixty years after the Florence flood, evokes the spirit of solidarity, collective strength and resilience that enabled the city to overcome one of the most dramatic moments in its history.
