La fabbrica del libro d’artista

Exhibitions

From September 24, 2026, to January 9, 2027, the National Central Library of Florence will host the exhibition The Artist’s Book Factory (La fabbrica del libro d’artista). The exhibition explores the relationship between art, literature, and 20th-century publishing through a selection of works from the Artist’s Collection, formed from the extraordinary collection of Loriano Bertini, which was acquired by the Library in 2000.

At the heart of the exhibition is Paris sans fin by Alberto Giacometti, a masterpiece published posthumously in 1969 by the publisher Tériade and comprising 150 original lithographs. Around this work, the exhibition brings together some of the most important artist’s books of the 20th century and the key figures behind their creation: Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miró, Le Corbusier, Roger Chastel, and Jean Dubuffet, alongside writers, poets, publishers, typographers, and printers.

The exhibition invites visitors to view these volumes not merely as precious illustrated books, but as complex works of art, created page by page through a dialogue between different artistic languages, materials, and crafts.
