Villa Castelpulci

Villas and castles

Originally a fortified village dating back to the 13th century BC, the building was converted into a villa in the 16th century, when it came into the possession of the Soderini family (1511–1590).
After passing into the hands of the Florentine Riccardi family, the residence was renovated and extended from 1667 onwards; by the end of the 17th century, it had been graced with a spectacular cypress-lined approach, the Viottolone.

The villa’s fortunes mirrored those of the Riccardi family, and in 1847 it passed into state ownership; for many years it served as a psychiatric hospital, and in 1918 the poet Dino Campana was admitted there, remaining for fourteen years until his death in 1932.

Years of neglect followed until its revival in 2012, when it became the headquarters of the Scuola Superiore della Magistratura, an institution for advanced training.
