From Mammoths to Whales: Bringing the Past Within Everyone’s Reach - The University of Florence’s Museum of Geology and Paleontology Reopens

Special Openings, tours and workshops
Exhibitions

On 19 June, the University of Florence’s Museum of Geology and Paleontology, one of the most fascinating museums within the University Museum System, will reopen to the public. The museum has been redesigned with a strong focus on accessibility, making its scientific and natural heritage available to an even wider audience.

Among the skeletons of giant proboscideans, saber-toothed cats, marine fossils and evidence from ancient geological eras, visitors can embark on a journey through Tuscany’s distant past, when the region resembled a savannah or lay beneath the sea.

The reopening ceremony will take place on Friday, 19 June, at 3:00 pm in the Strozzi Hall (Via La Pira 4). Following the ceremony, visitors will be able to explore the museum free of charge, accompanied by the curators and supported by the new multimedia guide. The day will continue at the Botanical Garden with the opening of a tactile exhibition dedicated to animals of the past.

To celebrate the reopening, admission to both the Museum of Geology and Paleontology and the Botanical Garden will be free on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June. The programme includes tactile guided tours, guided visits with Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpretation, family activity tours, and workshops for children and young people supported by Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools.
