Teatro Verdi

Teatro Verdi

This theatre was commissioned by Girolamo Pagliano, a former baritone and lucky pharmacist, as well as inventor o fan elixir of long life. It was built where once stood the Stinche prison in Florence and immediately appeared imposing. It was inaugurated in 1854 with Il Viscardello, the first title of Verdi’s Rigoletto. It was named after Verdi in 1901; It has a history of transfers of ownership.

The first important restoration works were carried out in 1950; other restoration works followed the 1966 flood of the Arno. The seating area, the gallery and the boxes (six kinds) have been recently modernized and acoustics improved.
