The abbey was founded in 1036 by a Benedictine monk named San Giovanni Gualberto, gradually growing and taking on its current basic appearance at the end of the 15th century. The tower was erected in the 16th century, the church façade in the following century, while the decoration inside dates to the 18th century.
Around the abbey are a number of chapels and tabernacles decorated with Scenes from the Life of Giovanni Gualberto, produced in the 16th-17th centuries. The museum is in the tower, and comprises paintings, gold and silver items, liturgical hangings and objects relating to the history of the Vallombrosan monks. Of particular interest is a Madonna and Child with Saints by Domenico Ghirlandaio.
