The museum is in the Canonica of the Pieve di San Piero in Mercato, the origins of which date to the 11th century. The items on display, ranging from the 13th to the 16th century, are ordered according to the old ecclesiastical groupings from which they came. Each room has paintings, silverware and wooden furnishings from an individual church, thereby preserving a sense of unity. There is also a separate section devoted to liturgical hangings and manuscripts. Masterpiece of the museum is the painting of the Virgin with child by Filippo Lippi.
