Crumb Gallery

Active since: 2019
Areas of interest: Contemporary art

Crumb Gallery #womeninart was founded as the first art gallery in Italy and Europe dedicated exclusively to women artists, with the aim of reducing the gap between men and women in the world of contemporary art. The gallery promotes, supports and displays paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations and performances of women. In the 1980s, female artists couldn’t even survive; four decades later, it is still difficult for women to break into the market. Solo exhibitions dedicated to women make up only 25% of the total, while 90% of artists represented in galleries are male. In Italy in 2016, a work by a woman went for €179,000, while €4,685,000 was paid for one by a man. The number of galleries in the world which display only female artists can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Crumb Gallery is the fruit of the passion of four women: Rory Cappelli, a journalist with the daily La Repubblica who has written on art, travel and culture for many years (in Art e Dossier, Carnet and La Repubblica’s ‘Viaggi’ pages) and curated various catalogues; Lea Codognato, a communications expert in the field of culture and owner of one of Italy’s most important communications agencies (Davis&Co); Adriana Luperto, a multifaceted artist who has exhibited in solo and collective shows of great prestige, including the Italian pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2007); and Emanuela Mollica, an architect who specialises in the field of cultural and museum objects and has worked with the Uffizi Gallery, the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence and the Bargello National Museum.
