Its foundation, as an oratory, dates back to 925. Even the Florentine Donati family is among the church's patrons.
The current building, the result of many structural changes over the centuries, was fully restored in 1910 even with the contribution of one of the masters of the Italian Liberty style, the painter and ceramist Galileo Andrea Maria Chini. Dating back to this period are the decoration of the apse, the ceramic altar frontal and the lunette above the entrance gate.
Unfortunately only a few traces of the original Romanesque structure remain, except maybe some limestone ashlars, brought to light by the fallen plaster of the facade. On the left, sempre della facciata, you can admire an interesting sandstone fragment with intertwined decorations, dating back to the 12th century.
This church features a panel with the enthroned Madonna with saints, dating back to the end of the 15th century and a canvas with Our Lady of Mount Carmel, of the following century, both currently located in the chapel of the Misericordia of Pontassieve.
