The San Pietro parish church in Vaglia has very ancient origins. Indeed it already appears in a document dated 983 in which emperor Ottone III confirmed the properties of the Florentine chapter. Right from the start, this parish church was a reference point not only for religious life but for social life too. This parish church was a place of welcome for wayfarers and pilgrims who were heading towards the Mugello area. Such was its importance that it became the centre for the development of the future urban area of the municipality. The existing church is the result of restoration works carried out between 1786 and 1789. It features a bell tower and a facade preceded by a triple-arch arcade. The interior houses valuable works such as the restored and recomposed Altarpiece originally from the church of Santi Stefano e Lorenzo in Pescina. The glazed terracotta altarpiece, depicting a nativity scene, is the work of Giovanni della Robbia and dates back to 1513. Unfortunately some pieces are missing as the altarpiece has been the subject of thefts and losses over the years. Furthermore you can see a 1609 painting by Piero Confortini commissioned by the Saltini family while above the altar lies the burnished Crucifix made by Gianbologna. Other works are: the processional Cross with the mysteries of the Rosary and the portrayals on canvas of San Pietro and Paolo by Domenico Pugliani, a Vaglia-born painter; the Blessing Christ, San Matteo and San Giovanni Evangelista by Lorenzo Lippi. Linked to this church is the painter Angiolo Nardi (1584 - 1660), a Vaglia native who, when he moved to the Court of Filippo IV of Spain, donated to this church many possessions including a treasure chest full of religious objects in silver and furnishings. This church is included in the Romanesque itinerary. You can continue your visit with the church of San Romolo in Bivigliano and the parish church of San Cresci in Pratolino.
