San Romolo a Gaville parish church

Standing in the village of Gaville, surrounded by olive trees, is the Romanesque parish church consecrated to Saint Romulus martyr, the first Bishop of Fiesole. The stone building was built at the behest of the Ubertini family, feudal lords of the area, in the early years of the 1000s along the Cassia Adrianea, one of the roads connecting Florence with the Valdarno area, where a tower stood, probably repurposed as watchtower by the Langobards, which now acts as bell tower.

The facade of the church stands out for its simplicity: the door with a lunette on top and, placed high, a mullioned window. The inside of the church features a single apse and three naves divided by square-plan pillars and round arches; the roof is supported by wooden trusses, while the walking surface is split level. Towards the facade, the pillars are replaced by sandstone columns, with figurative capitals which feature alternating plant motifs and illustrations taken from the religious texts or based on the world's creation. Found in the left nave is an Annunciation  by the Ghirlandaio workshop (15th c.), while in the right nave you can see the fresco which was once placed on the lunette of the facade, a Sienese school work of the early 15th century, as well as the large Florentine circle canvas portraying St. Michael the Archangel (18th c.). Close to the parish church is a rural complex dating back to the 15th century, currently home to the Museum of Rural Civilisation.

Restoration work was required in the wake of World War II, bringing the church back to its alleged original appearance.
