Piazza Lorenzo Ghiberti

Piazza Lorenzo Ghiberti Pelago

Already existing as the market square, it was named after the famous Florentine goldsmith who was born here in 1378.
The square represents a typical developed centre according to an established custom in the Florentine county, it covers a total area of 1825 m2 of which 136 are covered with loggias and porticos.
The flooring arrangement is very well-structured and follows the ridge on which it is placed helping to create steep slopes and structures.

The junction of three roads, one coming from the Pelago castle that joins, in the "low" part of the square, a second one coming from the west, the square opens up in full to the eyes of a visitor coming from the third road, which joins from the North after a bottleneck purpose-made by two perimeter buildings.

Placed in the largest area where the first two roads meet was the well, essential for the square (of the market) which overlooked two underground cisterns, designed around 1844 by the engineer Fortini and later created to provide the inhabitants, who had by now become over 900, with the appropriate supply of water.
In the design, as stated in the documents of the time, the main cistern was supposed to have a size of 24 by 12 Florentine arm's lengths with a depth of 8, while the small one was 4 by 4 Florentine arm's lengths.
The cisterns are not currently used anymore for the water supply.
