Chiesa di San Pietro in Selva - Lastra a Signa

San Pietro in Selva church

Traveling along the Vecchia Pisana road, past the castle of Malmantile lies the church of San Pietro in Selva, whose place name refers to the surrounding area that switches between cultivated areas and thick and extensive woods.

The church dates back at least to the 13th century, but the current building is the result of an alteration done in 1955, during which, in keeping with medieval tradition, all superstructure originating from the 18th century restoration has been removed and the wooden cover, the apse and the outside porch have been built from scratch.

On the facade there are some frescos, today almost lost and datable to the end of the 14th century, that can be attributed to Lorenzo di Bicci's studio. Next to the church stands the Madonna della Neve oratory, founded in 1578.

Inside there are two side altars dating back to the 16th century; on the right one stands a Crucifix painted at the end of the 14th century, maybe by Lorenzo di Bicci himself.
