Gabinetto Viesseux

Gabinetto Scientifico Letterario G.P. Vieusseux

Founded in 1819 by Giovan Pietro Vieusseux, a merchant of Genevan origin, the G. P. Vieusseux Scientific-Literary Cabinet was a reading cabinet, open to conversation and exchange of ideas.

It houses a library, where it is possible to borrow books in Italian, French and English.

During the 20th century three new sectors were created: the Restoration Laboratory, for the recovery of volumes seriously damaged by the 1966 flood, the Romantic Center, aimed at studying and researching nineteenth-century civilization, and the Contemporary Archives, conceived as a place for the conservation of manuscripts, correspondence and private libraries of important personalities of twentieth-century culture.

The Institute, located inside Palazzo Strozzi, also promotes conferences, lectures and exhibitions throughout the year.
