Chiesa di Santa Maria Primerana - Fiesole

Santa Maria Primerana church

The church overlooks piazza Mino da Fiesole, the main town square.

Originally it used to be an oratory, mentioned for the first time in 966, probably built on an even older place of worship.

The building was enlarged during the Middle Ages and the facade of the church was reworked at the end of the 16th century, with elements in mannerist style and etched decorations made by Lodovico Buti. The still existing portico was added in the 19th century.

The interior has a single nave, with a short transept; on the left wall you can see the remains of an ancient pillar built in the wall. The church features rather faded frescoes with stories of the Virgin by Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, a big Crucifix on panel, attributed to Bonaccorso di Cino (14th century), a glazed terracotta altarpiece by the Andrea della Robbia workshop, and two marble low reliefs by Francesco da Sangallo, all of them dating back to the 16th century.
