Le Muratine Pontassieve

Le Muratine

Le muratine were born in the old building which already existed before 1700 in Pontassieve, when in this place the palazzo Pretorio was located and a wing of it hosted the old prison.
Like the whole old town the building was heavily hit by the aerial bombings of world war II. After the war the old prison was rebuilt and enlarged according to the original type, that is with small-sized cells (3m x 3m) with views onto the courtyard, the so-called “yard time”. The prison remained open until the very early 90's, from that date the building was closed.

The recent restoration operation concerned both the outer courtyard and the inner part, wich keeps the cells in their original form.

Reopened to the public in 2021, Le muratine have become a reality, a new gathering place, thanks to the completion of the work that was carried out with the contribution of Fondazione CR Firenze as part of “Spazi Attivi”, a thematic call with which the Foundation supports projects for the regeneration, restoration, re-use and reactivation of urban spaces open to the public.
