Esibizione degli Sbandieratori in Piazza Marsilio Ficino

The Flag Wavers of the Florentine Borghi e Sestieri

The group of Flag Wavers of the Florentine Borghi e Sestieri of Figline and Incisa Valdarno, on the outskirts of Florence, revives medieval and Renaissance traditions with spectacular choreography and music.

Bishops, drums and trumpets move across the field, while captains accompany the banner, evoking aspects of ancient military life: combat, danger, enemies, up to the celebration of victory and the exchange of flags that leaves room for an exciting festive atmosphere

And, while during the Middle Ages flags were only used for war purposes and public displays were reserved for times of peace, over time these have intensified to the point where they are the main purpose of today's ensembles.

The foundation of the Figline group dates back to 1965, when students and teachers from the local 'Marsilio Ficino' classical high school became interested in the history of the art of the Bandierai dei Liberi Comuni and formed the first nucleus of what today has about 80 elements including captains, high and low drums, clarions and flag wavers, as well as a real flag school. A special feature of this formation is the use of wooden poles with counterweight and embroidered drapes

Today, the Flag Wavers of the Florentine Borghi and Sestieri perform at both public and private events, taking the Tuscan tradition abroad and enriching the municipality of Figline and Incisa Valdarno with their performances, such as during the Festa del Perdono, held in September, and Autumnia, a fair dedicated to agriculture and local food, immersing spectators in an exciting and engaging atmosphere.
