The Porta alla Croce gate, at the centre of Piazza Beccaria, has undergone various transformations over time, the most evident being in the 16th century when it was reduced in height during the siege of Florence in 1529-1530. The roof covering it dates from 1805 and was designed by Giuseppe Del Rosso.
