Gelato ice cream
An experience to enjoy in Florence? Taste some gelato. Whether in a cup or a classic cone, gelato has a lot to do with this city.
It is said that it was the brilliant architect, sculptor, engineer, and set designer Bernardo Buontalenti who invented ice cream in 1565 to impress his master, Cosimo I de' Medici, and an international guest visiting Florence.
The frozen cream, made from eggs and sugar, quickly spread throughout Europe, thanks in part to an exceptional admirer: Catherine de' Medici, Queen of France (but originally from Florence).
There are many ice cream parlors in Florence: the most traditional ones offer flavors such as Buontalenti, or Florentine cream, created by the multifaceted Bernardo. It is a very tasty and rich cream made with cream, eggs, milk, and sugar.
Ice cream is made in different ways: there are sorbets, made with fruit, water, and sugar, which are fresh and thirst-quenching; semifreddi, which are very rich in cream; and actual ice cream, which is made with milk or cream.
Some tips: the secret to its deliciousness lies in the quality of the ingredients. Be wary of overly artificial colors or additions such as Smarties, sprinkles, or various types of chocolate. The flavor of the ice cream unfolds on your taste buds from the very first bite.
In Italy, gelato is chosen from a display case, paid for, and eaten while walking, so you will rarely find table service in the best gelato shops in the city. As a rule, you can choose up to three different flavors, but this depends on the shop.
