Slavko Kopač: The Hidden Treasure: Informal Art, Surrealism and Art Brut

Exhibitions

From 12 September to 13 November 2025, the Exhibition Hall of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence will host a retrospective dedicated to Slavko Kopač, a French-Croatian artist and prominent figure of the Compagnie de l'Art Brut, as well as the first curator of the Collection de l'Art Brut founded by Jean Dubuffet.

Promoted by ArtRencontre, the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, and the Kopač Committee Association, with the patronage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the Region of Tuscany, and the Municipality of Florence, this is the first independent retrospective on the artist and marks his return to Florence after his solo exhibition in 1945. The exhibition will highlight the work of Kopač, who was held in high esteem by André Breton, Jean Dubuffet, and Michel Tapié, and who is regarded as a symbol of innovative and interdisciplinary spirit in the post-war period.

Slavko Kopač

Exhibitions

By exploring unusual materials and different techniques, Slavko Kopač moved away from tradition to develop his own unique and experimental style.  The exhibition presents a poetic universe of the artist's work, including oil paintings, drawings, watercolours, artist's books, visual poems, collages, assemblages and ceramics, covering the period from the post-war years to the 1960s.

Alongside the works, the exhibition features archival materials and contributions from people who profoundly influenced his development: Jean Dubuffet, Jean Paulhan, Cesare Zavattini, Michel Tapié and others.
