Carlo Adolfo Schlatter. Artist of the spirit

Exhibitions

From November 27, 2025, to February 22, 2026, the Fabiani Rooms of Palazzo Medici Riccardi will host the exhibition “Carlo Adolfo Schlatter. Artist of the Spirit,” dedicated to a unique figure in the Florentine art scene of the 20th century.

A painter, writer, and scholar of philosophy and theosophy, Carlo Adolfo Schlatter (1873-1958) trained at the Scuola del Nudo, studying with Ciaranfi and Ussi, in an environment marked by profound spiritual tension and critical positions towards positivism.

His adherence to theosophy at the end of the 19th century represented a decisive turning point in his creative journey, which transformed from an initial Macchiaioli-style realism to a mystical symbolism. Through painting, graphic art, and writing, Schlatter developed an original and visionary language.

A section of the exhibition will be hosted at the A. Bonsanti Contemporary Archive of the Vieusseux, with documents from the Schlatter Fund. The initiative is promoted by the Metropolitan City of Florence and organized by the MUS.E Foundation with Anna Mazzanti and Valentina Zucchi, in collaboration with the Schlatter House Museum, the Polytechnic University of Milan, and the Gabinetto Vieusseux.

Carlo Adolfo Schlatter. Artist of the Spirit

Exhibitions

The exhibition is divided into seven main sections that guide visitors through the fundamental themes of the artist's work: self-portraits of the thirty-year-old Schlatter and his wife Emma Moni, a central figure in his life and imagination;  Landscapes, where nature becomes a symbol of spiritual elevation and a mystical instrument; the Seascapes, which take on an esoteric significance, the Contrasts, Symbolism, Manuscripts and Printed Books, and finally the reconstruction of his studio.
