Snow Hunt! 6 White Getaways Just a Step from Florence

What is there to do in Florence when it gets this cold? Look for snow! Seeing the city center under a blanket of snow is a rare event, but you only need to travel a few kilometers to find yourself immersed in an enchanted winter landscape. When temperatures drop as they have in recent days and the peaks surrounding the city turn white, the hunt for the "perfect spot" to play in the snow or take a rejuvenating walk begins.

If you’re looking for an alternative to the ski slopes, here are the best places nearby where the snow transforms the landscape into a fairy tale.

Just a few minutes from Florence, the Pratolino Medici Park home to the Colossus of the Apennines becomes truly magical under a white mantle. Recently, it was literally "buried" in snow: walking among ancient trees heavy with flakes is an experience that feels like something straight out of a movie.

Staying in the municipality of Vaglia, this is one of the most beloved destinations for Florentines. The woods leading up to Montesenario are perfect for a manageable snow walk. Between the red berries peeking through the white and the crosses standing tall in the silence, it is the ideal place to find peace (and take stunning photos)..

Monte Morello, or the "mountain of the Florentines" is always a sure bet. As the closest ridge to the city, it’s the perfect destination for a quick "hit and run" trip. The trails leading toward the springs or the peaks are great for hiking in boots, surrounded by a panorama that, on clear days, lets you see the entire snowy plain below.

As you climb toward the Abbey of Vallombrosa, the atmosphere turns solemn. The small lake and the fountain in front of the Abbey often offer the striking sight of completely frozen water. For those seeking "real" snow, continue up toward Secchieta: here, the wind creates hoar frost, coating tree branches in ice crystals that look like glass sculptures.

Perched above Villamagna, the Convento dell’Incontro dominates the hill. Thanks to its exposure, it’s often one of the first places to turn white as soon as temperatures drop. It’s less crowded than Vallombrosa, making it ideal for those in the southern area of Florence looking for snow close to home without the crowds.

If you want to be certain of finding deep snow, head toward Londa. Located on the edge of the Casentino Forests National Park, this is a true sanctuary of nature. Here, snow is a regular guest, and the woods offer wild, spectacular scenery—perfect for those who want to spend an entire day immersed in the deep white.

We remind you to wear warm clothes and mountain shoes. As far as your car is concerned don't forget snow chains or winter tires; the roads can be treacherous.
