From the Enzo Ferroni Archive: The Flood and the Restoration of Artworks. The “Generous Collaboration” of a Visionary Chemist.

Exhibitions

From 10 October to 7 November 2026, an exhibition at the Historical Archives of the Municipality of Florence will showcase documents from the Enzo Ferroni Archive, dedicated to Enzo Ferroni, Professor of Chemistry and Rector of the University of Florence.

Organised to mark the 60th anniversary of the Florence flood, the exhibition brings together documents from the Enzo Ferroni Archive and the Historical Archives of the Municipality of Florence. It traces the contribution of the Florentine scientist to the recovery and conservation of artworks damaged by the devastating flood of 1966.

The exhibition features photographs, the earliest experimental measurements undertaken to assess the performance of the selected materials, as well as correspondence, working notes and drafts of publications that emerged from an unforgettable period of study and research. The origins of the Ferroni–Dini method for the restoration of mural paintings thus emerge directly from the archival documents, which tell a story as fascinating as it is transformative—one that would irrevocably change the relationship between science and art.
