How to reach the main tourist destinations in Tuscany

Moving around

If you’re visiting Florence without your own transportation, there are plenty of options for reaching the main tourist destinations in our region by public transit.

By Train

Florence is connected by a well-developed rail network that makes it easy to reach numerous destinations from, for example, Pisa (with direct and very frequent connections), as well as towns like Arezzo, Pistoia, Lucca, and the beach at Viareggio-

By Bus with Autolinee Toscane

A valid alternative to the train is the public bus service, especially for destinations without train stations. Throughout our region, urban and intercity bus routes are operated by AT-Autolinee Toscane which has a very extensive network connecting virtually all populated areas. Among the main tourist destinations best reached by scheduled bus, we recommend: San Gimignano, Volterra, Vinci, and Cortona. For more details, visit the AT-Autolinee Toscane website or download the informational kit in PDF format.

A new service aimed at tourists, launching in March 2026, is offered by Tootbus-Tuscany, a joint venture in which Autolinee Toscane holds a stake. This is a new, sustainable, and flexible intercity sightseeing model. There are currently two routes: the Green Line (Florence–Lucca–Pisa) and the Terracotta Line (Florence–Siena–San Gimignano). The ticket, valid for 1, 2, 3, or 5 days, allows you to depart from any of these cities and travel freely (with no limits, and the ability to hop on and off the numerous daily trips) along the designated routes; the service includes Tootwalks: digital walking tours with multilingual audio guides to explore the historic centers on your own.
