High-Altitude Lights: A Forty-Year Love Letter on Film

Exhibitions

From March 26 to May 15, 2026, Manifattura Tabacchi will host High-Altitude Lights: A Forty-Year Love Letter on Film, a photography exhibition by Zhang Chaoyin. The show explores the dialogue between humans and the landscape, time and memory, light and matter.

For over forty years, the artist has been conducting a systematic study of the Himalayan region, creating a visual and cultural atlas of the planet’s so-called 'Third Pole.' The exhibition mainly showcases the work of Zhang Chaoyin, featuring 60 film-based pieces created over four decades of exploration, in dialogue with the work of Zhang Yuxiao. Together, they invite a reflection on experience and contemporary life: images of glaciers, geological formations, and human presence encourage viewers to think about deep time and the fragility of ecosystems.

Luci d’alta quota: lettera di un amore di quarant’anni su pellicola

Exhibitions

The photographs are printed using the historic platinum–palladium process, patented in England in 1873 by William Willis. One of the most esteemed techniques in the history of photography, it gives the images exceptional tonal richness and extraordinary longevity. Alongside traditional paper prints, Zhang Chaoyin also presents works on Chinese silk using the same process—a rare and technically complex method that further deepens the dialogue between light, material, and tradition
