Ottone Rosai. A Poet Above All

Exhibitions

Through the figures and places most significant to Ottone Rosai (Florence, 1895 – Ivrea, 1957), the exhibition offers visitors a nuanced portrait of the painter, highlighting his deep connection with Florence and with the intellectual circles of his time.

The exhibition is further enriched by a selection of documents from the G.P. Vieusseux Scientific and Literary Cabinet – Alessandro Bonsanti Contemporary Archive. It also represents an important link between Florence’s civic collections and the figure of Georg Baselitz, a great admirer of Rosai and the subject of a major upcoming exhibition at Museo Novecento.

Ottone Rosai. A Poet Above all

Exhibitions

The exhibition highlights two inseparable poles of the artist’s research: the faces of friends and everyday figures, and Florence itself, experienced as an inner landscape and the stage of a shared experience.

In his portraits, loved ones emerge as silent presences, charged with affection and moral tension, conveying a profound truth often veiled with melancholy. Meanwhile, the streets, hills, monuments, and isolated houses of Florence become inner spaces—living organisms with which the artist weaves a physical and moral relationship.
