Palatine Electress - 18 February 2026

Folk traditions

Like every year, on next 18 February  we celebrate the Palatine Electress, Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici, on the day of her death in 1743. The last heir of the Medici family, this great figure had the merit of binding all the assets of the extraordinary Medici collections to the city of Florence, and to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, forever, by signing the famous Family Pact, according to a rather modern principle: ‘for the ornament of the State, for the benefit of the public and to attract the curiosity of foreigners.’

It is thanks to her, therefore, that the extraordinary collection accumulated over the centuries by the Medici family has remained intact in Florence, still constituting today a cultural heritage of inestimable and unparalleled value.
