Visits to the restoration site of the Bardi Chapel

Special Openings, tours and workshops

Starting from April 10th through the end of June, it will be possible to visit the restoration site of the Bardi Chapel, decorated by Giotto in the early 1300s with the Stories of Saint Francis. This is an extraordinary opportunity to admire one of the masterpieces of Italian art up close, observing details and technical features of a mature work by the great artist, who chose to depict the most significant moments in the life of the Poor Man of Assisi through six scenes rich in realism and expressive intensity.

The restoration of the Bardi Chapel was commissioned by the Opera di Santa Croce and entrusted to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, one of the most prestigious restoration institutions in the world. It offers a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of the Florentine master, while also gaining insight into the daily work of such an extraordinary innovator.

Visits take place on scheduled days and times for groups of up to 10 people, with the following options:

  • Standard visit – visitors are accompanied by reception staff only (approximately 50 minutes total, including 30 minutes of actual visit time). The cost is €10 plus the entrance ticket to the monumental complex (free for Florence residents).
  • Guided visit – visitors are accompanied by a guide who explains both the paintings and the restoration process (approximately 70 minutes total, including 50 minutes of actual visit time). The cost is €20 plus the entrance ticket to the monumental complex (free for Florence residents).

Reservations are available on the Opera di Santa Croce website:

  • from April 9 for visits in April (in Italian)
  • from April 21 for visits in May (in Italian and English)
  • from May 18 for visits in June (in Italian and English)
