In the 2026 season of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Alban Berg’s masterpiece Wozzeck, conducted by Maestro Thomas Guggeis, takes center stage. Starring Wolfgang Koch and Sam Furnes.
Wozzeck, an opera inspired by Georg Büchner’s fragment of the same name, tells the dramatic story of Wozzeck, a poor and oppressed soldier, trapped in a society marked by marginalization, exploitation and violence. Through intense music and powerful dramatic tension, Berg explores human fragility and deep social injustice. with an opera which would soon become a landmark work of the early twentieth century as well as an emblem of Expressionist theater.
