Walking in Vinci: Poggio di Marradino - Trail n. 12a
The Metropolitan City of Florence
By walk & by bike
Trail n. 12A, called Poggio di Marradino, starts from the centre of Vinci, exactly from the Mulino della Doccia and ends on Via Calvi, near the athletic field.
The route is easy and suitable for a short excursion just outside the hamlet, going around a hill, indeed called Poggio Marradino. From its top, you can enjoy a beautiful glimpse of the Conti Guidi Castle and the Santa Croce Church.
Along the route you find:
The Mulino della Doccia, already existing at the time of Leonardo, whose hydraulic mechanism was drawn by him in the Atlantic Codex (f. 765r), writing down, next to the sketch, the name of the building, the Molino della doccia of Vinci.
The area called Serravalle, where Leonardo had designed an artificial lake obtained from the damming of three brooks in their lowest point of confluence, so as to fill the most sunken part of the area. The drawings made by Leonardo are the proof of the complete knowledge of his native land that he had and, thanks to these, although the project was never fulfilled, we can imagine how it was supposed to be.
