The Changing of the Guard ceremony returns on May 4, 2025, an event that, in many European cities, represents an unmissable tradition for visitors from around the world. This ritual, held on the first Sunday of each month, has its roots in timeless military practices. The changing of the guard is a symbol of strength and security, historically associated with the protection of castles, fortifications, battlefields, and cities. Over time, as military strategies evolved, it took on a deeply symbolic role, representing the power and authority of major military and civil institutions, even in our modern era.
The event takes place on the Arengario of Palazzo Vecchio, and is performed five times throughout the morning. It is traditionally preceded and followed by the Historic Parade of the Florentine Republic, which marches through the streets of the historic center before taking part in the ceremony and again after its conclusion. Access to the square and along the streets affected by the parade is free and open to the public.
The Banner of Florence or the Historical Procession of the Florentine Republic is positioned at the centre of the Arengario, two armed soldiers are positioned on either side of it to guard the City Symbol, the Captain and an Officer complete the Guard.
