Ex Chiesa di Santa Monaca

Ex Church of Santa Monaca

The building belonged to the monastery of the Augustinians, coming from Castiglion Fiorentino, of Santa Monica, popularly called Santa Monaca, who had had to take refuge in Florence, during the war between the Florentine militia, and those of Milan in 1442. Here Camilla Martelli had her first education, first lover and then morganatic wife of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de' Medici.

The monastery underwent great changes in the sixteenth century, with the remaking of the altar and the choir, and later in the seventeenth century with the construction of the wooden choir and organ and the fresco of the vault: The Glory of San Martino by Cosimo Ulivelli (1700).

In 1800 the religious order was suppressed and since then the building was used for various purposes including the charity nursery school for children.

The church, now deconsecrated, is home to cultural events, exhibitions and concerts.
