Badia di Buonsollazzo

Badia del Buonsollazzo

The religious building, known by the name of Sanctus Bartholomoeus de Bono-Solatio, due to its sunny location, is mentioned for the first time in 1084, but it seems to have been founded by Marquis Ugo di Toscana even before the year 1000. It is a monastic complex located in the countryside at the foot of Mount Senario, in the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo.

Originally a Benedectine monastery, it was given in the 14th century to the Cistercians who came from the Badia di San Salvatore a Settimo. In the 18th century Grand Duke Cosimo III started a major renovation programme, demolishing and rebuilding both the monastery and the church, and after that he let a community of Trappist monks settle there.

After centuries of various events, the complex was bought by private citizens at the end of the last century and is currently visible only from the outside, as it is in a state of complete abandon.
