Permanent exhibition on the Tuscan flask

Points of interest
Museums

A permanent exhbition telling the history of the flask: the traditional oval-shaped glass container covered with marsh grass.

Born in the 14th century, over the centuries it has become the favourite container for the bottling and, later, the export of the wine produced by wineries in the region and, in particular, in the Chianti area.

The exhibition is located in Montelupo Fiorentino, inside the 14th century tower overlooking the Arno river, created just to control river traffic; on display inside are various types of flasks, tools and a selection of vintage photographs.

Inside, a bronze statue by the artist Piero Bertelli remembers the work of the "fiascaie": the women who covered the containers, skilfully weaving the bundles of dried grass.
