There are many sites belonging to Florence's ancient defensive system: monumental gates and towers, most of which were designed by Arnolfo di Cambio at the end of the 13th century. But there are also fortresses from the Medici era, which reopen to the public between spring and summer and offer many new ideas for visits and truly unique viewpoints!
Also for 2025, the programme of visits is organised by Mus.e Florence and includes various locations around the city:
The first to reopen, on 24 June, was Forte Belvedere (open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until 15 October, closed on Mondays), where guided tours are organised every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.
Porta San Frediano is open throughout July from 5pm to 8pm (visits every 30 minutes), while the Torre di San Niccolò (opening hours 5pm-8pm, visits every 45 minutes) is open in August. Porta Romana, on the other hand, will be open throughout September, from 4pm to 7pm, with visits every 30 minutes.
In addition, there are guided tours of places that are not usually open to visitors, such as the Fortezza San Giovanni (25/7, 29/8, 26/9), better known as Fortezza da Basso, or the less known Baluardo di San Giovanni (11/7, 8/8, 12/9).
