In the Footsteps of Giotto in Rome: The Vatican Fragment

Exhibitions

From July 29 to November 1, 2025, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure Museum in Florence will host the Vatican Fragment, an important fragment of a fresco by Giotto. This piece was restored between 2016 and 2019 as part of the exhibition series "Caring for Art. Restorations on Display."

This is the only remaining fragment of a cycle of frescoes by Giotto and his workshop (XIV century) located in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, depicting two saints (initially mistakenly identified as St. Peter and St. Paul).

After being exhibited in Milan in 2015, the fragment underwent thorough restoration and analysis, which helped better understand its technical and stylistic aspects and confirmed its attribution to Giotto. The exhibition offers the public and scholars the chance to see an almost unpublished fragment and discover the results of an important research and conservation project.
